Bison lose to the Malakoff 60-61 on a 3-pointer at the buzzer
The Bison hosted Malakoff on February 10th and suffered a 60-61 loss as the Bison battled for a playoff spot. The Bison led 17-15 after the first quarter as Ryan Rath led the scoring with 7 points. Bryce Ryder scored 6 and Jarrett Fishbeck connected for 4. The Bison had a good second quarter scoring 17 more points and led 34-25 and seized control of the game. Caleb Ayers scored 9 points in the second quarter, Shelley Pate and Dirk Kilgore scored 3 each and Ryder scored 2.
The Bison led by their largest margin early in the third period as they led the Tigers 38-27 and appeared on their way to a victory. At the end of the third period the Bison led 45-44 as they only scored 11 points with Ryder scoring 5, Jarrett Fishbeck 4 and Rath scored 2. The game was nip and tuck in the fourth quarter until Rath got a rebound and was fouled with the game tied at 58 and 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Rath sank a free throw to give the Bison a 59-58 lead. A few seconds later Kilgore was fouled and he sank a free throw to give the Bison a 60-58 lead. With 3 seconds on the clock the Bison inbounded the ball at mid court but the pass was stolen by a Tiger who dribbled across the half court line and made a desperation shot that went through the net as the buzzer went off and the Bison lost 61-60. Call the shot luck but give the Tiger player credit for intercepting the inbounds pass and making the shot.
The fourth quarter scoring was led by Jarrett Fishbeck with 7 points, Rath scored 4, and Kilgore and Ryder scored 2 each. For the game Jarrett Fishbeck had a double double as he scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Rath also had a double double as he scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds. Ryder scored 15 points and had 5 rebounds, Ayers scored 9 points and had 4 rebounds, Pate scored 3 points and had 2 rebounds and Kilgore scored 5 points and had 4 rebounds.
With the loss the Bison must defeat the Leon Cougars at Jewett on February 14th to secure the 4th and final playoff spot. Both teams have 4-7 records in district and the winner will play Rice who are champions of district 17-AAA. The Bison defeated Leon 55- 45 in Buffalo on January 20th. The Bison played Teague a close game on February 2nd as the Bison led by a point with 4 minutes left but Teague came back and won. The Bison led Malakoff 60-58 with 3 seconds left before Malakoff hit the desperation shot to win 61-60. The Bison are capable of defeating Leon if they are playing as a team and have a chance to defeat Rice in the first round of the playoffs. Teague won the district, Malakoff was second and Westwood came in third.
